Course Evaluation

The GSLS is responsible for the quality of educational evaluations. The Educational Committee (EC) annually analyzes the evaluations of the various curriculum components, including the courses.

If the information below does not answer your question, you can send an e-mail to the quality assurance officer. The quality assurance officer depends on which Faculty organises the relevant Master’s programme:

The timing of the course evaluation is dependent on the academic period in which your course finishes. You can find more information about the period dates here.

If you are a course coordinator, the instructions below apply. If you are teaching a course but you are not coordinating it, please keep in touch with the course coordinator regarding the evaluation.

As a course coordinator:

  1. The quality assurance team will set up the evaluation of the course in the digital evaluation system Caracal.
  2. One week before the start of the period in which the course ends, you will receive an email from Caracal allowing you to review the questionnaire and add questions specific to your course. If applicable, ask other teachers whether they have valuable questions for the evaluation. A detailed manual can be found here and you can watch an instruction video below.
  3. At the beginning of the period, you will receive an email from the GSLS with the link for your students to fill in the course evaluation; you can also find this link in your caracal account. The course evaluation is now open. Students can thus start filling out the evaluation as soon as you share the link.
  4. As the course coordinator, you are responsible to share the link to the course evaluation with the students at the appropriate time. For most courses, the best moment to evaluate the course is right after the final examination. If courses do not have a final examination, it is important to find another moment at the end of the course when all students are present, to have the students fill in the evaluation form on their own device.
  5. Students may also fill out the evaluation after the course at home. You should also send a reminder ±1 week after the first evaluation.
  6. You have access to the evaluation results and will react to the answers in Caracal. You will receive a reminder about this two weeks after the period ends. If you wish to write a private reaction not shared with students, an attachment can be uploaded in Caracal. A detailed manual can be found here.
  7. Students can access the system and see the results from their colleagues as well as your reaction. They will only have access to the answers to closed questions.
  8. The Educational committee and Assessment Support Panel will have access to the results and the course coordinators reaction of all course evaluations.
  9. The Educational committee carefully looks at the course evaluation results and your reaction, so it is very important that you will react to your students comments!
  10. The degree and programme director/coordinator will also have access to the results and will be asked to reflect on them in the annual programme reports.

  2. For most courses, the best moment to evaluate the course is right after the final examination. If courses do not have a final examination, it is important to find another moment at the end of the course when all students are present, to have the students fill in the evaluation form on their own device.
  3. Students may also fill out the evaluation after the course at home and will receive one reminder to do so.
  4. The course coordinator has access to the evaluation results and will provide feedback in Caracal. Students can access the system and see the results as well as the feedback.
  5. The quality assurance team will provide the Educational committee with the results and the coordinators feedback of all course evaluations.
  6. The Educational committee carefully looks at the evaluation results and the feedback, so it is very important that you will provide feedback!

For questions, suggestions and inquiries concerning course evaluations please e-mail the staff at Student Affairs.

In some cases, the Educational committee and the Assessment support panel might conclude based on the student evaluations and examination of the assessment matrix that the learning goals were not achieved. In such cases, it is possible that the course coordinator will be asked to update the course format, assessment tasks and/or assessment matrix* to ensure that the next time the course is taught, the learning goals will be met.

*If you need help to adapt your assessment matrix, please have a look at this page.
